Best Careers for College Grads in 2016

Author: Michael Smith

People go to college, people get bachelor's degrees – but, even then, finding a job is far from a sure thing. There are plenty of reasons why, but one is the availability of jobs.

The University of California, San Diego Extension aims to help students – including adults going back to school – identify careers that are not only in demand now, but will continue to be well into the future.

Its Emerging Careers for 2016 report, published by the Extension's 's Center for Research on the Regional Economy, looked at careers that required a bachelor's degree and less than five years of work experience.

Researchers used nationwide data from labor data market firm Emsi to identify entry-level careers. Using that list, researchers looked at careers that were projected to grow more than the national employment rate of 4% from 2015-2019. Finally, they cross-referenced the list with data from Burning Glass, another labor-market research firm, that tracks the top nationwide job postings.

Their findings, below, list the 10 occupations with the highest projected growth rates and the most job postings. Growth rates are over 10 years: 2014–2024.

Mary L. Walshok, Ph.D., the UC, San Diego associate vice chancellor who summarized the findings, calls them encouraging for liberal arts majors, especially for those who add a set of very specific competencies to their general education through a certification program or specialized post baccalaureate training.
